Using Vinyl and LVT Flooring with Underfloor Heating

Vinyl and Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) flooring are excellent choices for use with our underfloor heating systems. These materials have relatively low thermal resistance, allowing heat to flow efficiently through the floor. However, most manufacturers specify a maximum floor surface temperature, typically around 26-27°C, which limits the heat output to approximately 65 W/m². This is generally sufficient for both new builds and retrofit projects.

Key Recommendations:

  • Always confirm with the flooring manufacturer that the vinyl or LVT product is suitable for use with underfloor heating.
  • For screed floors, ensure the screed is fully dry before laying the vinyl or LVT flooring.
  • When installing over a wooden sub-floor, allow adequate time for the wood to condition and stabilize while the underfloor heating is running to prevent inconsistencies caused by moisture changes.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s technical data and installation instructions carefully.

Temperature Control:

To ensure safe operation, Wunda’s underfloor heating systems include floor probes for each zone. These probes monitor and control the floor temperature, preventing it from exceeding the recommended limit for vinyl or LVT flooring.

Underfloor Heating Energy Efficiency

Radiator systems are the modern-day counterpart to traditional fireplaces. They rely on your boiler or heat pump to deliver hot water at temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees Celsius, enabling them to radiate heat into the room.

In contrast, water-based underfloor heating operates differently. Imagine a massive radiator seamlessly spread across your entire floor. This system covers the full floor area, allowing it to efficiently distribute heat using much lower water temperatures, typically between 35 and 45 degrees Celsius. This makes underfloor heating a top choice for energy efficiency and sustainability.
